Data Scientists Return to Check for Clues on Consumer Behavior

Check_Logo_new_large.jpg

Did American consumers spend more this past holiday season than the previous one? Do iPhone users, whose incomes are typically more than 50% higher than those of Android users, spend 50% more as consumers, as well? What part of the country contains the biggest spenders?

Now, if you are a data scientist looking for innovative ways to answer questions like these, you can check with Check.

We reported last November how data from Check’s mobile bill pay and account management app was helping academic researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor learn about the impact of the October 2013 government shutdown on consumer behavior.

Now researchers from the same institutions, along with others from Arizona State University, have returned to Check’s real-time aggregated data to learn about differences in holiday spending between 2012 and 2013.

Steven Tadelis, associate professor at University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, “From a research perspective, it’s amazing to work with the data provided by Check. With it, we are able to make interesting conclusions about trends and how they relate to mobile users.”
About those trends … the data Check provided to researchers – anonymous user data from more than 150,000 Android users and more than 200,000 iPhone users – revealed that while iPhone user spending outpaced that of Android users, both groups saw year-over-year holiday spending increases of more than 30%. At the same time, however, the average purchase amount for both groups was lower on a year-over-year basis.
Unsurprisingly, the top shopping destinations for both groups remain retailers Amazon.com, Walmart, and Target. In fact, the only non-retailer to make the top five in either year was fast food chain, McDonalds.
Other interesting observations:
  • The biggest spenders by average dollar amount live west of the Rockies (West and Mountain regions)
  • The biggest percent change in average dollar amount spent was the increase of more than 50% in the Plains region, which also had the second lowest average dollar amount spent.
  • The smallest percentage change in average dollar amount spend was on the east coast, led by New England and the Southeast.

Check’s New iOS7 App Puts Payments Front and Center

Check_logo_new_thumb.jpg

A new, simpler design is the easiest way to describe the iOS7-inspired makeover of Check’s bill pay and personal finance management app. But users won’t have to look long to find other ways that Check has worked to make it quicker and more efficient to make payments via smartphone.

“People want to know first and foremost three things,” said Guy Goldstein, Check CEO, in a conversation yesterday. “What you have, what you owe, and when bills are due.” To this end, the redesigned app not only puts payment functionality on the home screen, but also features enhanced navigation that makes it easier for users to manage bills, view reports, and change settings.

The redesigned app is the company’s first major initiative since raising $24 million in funding in September. The goal is to evolve a solution that began as a PFM app into a real payments application. “Our vision is to be a mobile payments company,” said Goldstein.
Check has also worked to create a more visually appealing app, both in terms of overall design, as well as in the way the app communicates with the user. For example, positive visualizations accompany periods when no bills are due.
Check thinks features like this help combat the negative psychology that often accompanies paying bills and managing personal finances. “People have so much stress about their money, especially in the U.S.,” said Goldstein.
The app will be available at the iTunes App Store by the end of the month.
Check was launched in 2008 and has nearly 10 million customers. The company processes bill pay volume of more than half a billion each year for a run rate of $2 million a day. Check (as Pageonce) demoed its technology as part of the FinovateFall show in 2010.

Check Data Helps Researchers See Impact of Government Shutdown on Consumers

Check_logo_new_thumb.jpg

Academic researchers borrowed user data from mobile billpay and account management innovator, Check, to learn the exact impact of the government shutdown on consumer spending.

Based at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, users were sampled anonymously for eleven months from December 2012 through October 2013. Researchers were able to confirm, via the Check data, that the shutdown impacted consumer spending nationally (5% drop in the last 10 days of September), but that government workers cut spending the most (15% over the same period).

“For the first time, we are able to accurately report the impact at national and local levels – and for government workers as a group – thanks to real-time data provided by Check,” said Steven Tadelis, associate professor of the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.
More than 50.000 Check users nationwide were included in the data set. More than 3,000 of these users lived in Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia.
